the sun came up across the globe in russia. a ten ton meteor hit the earth. and then, later on, another space rock went whizzing by the earth. our jodi hernandez has more from the space and science center in oakland. >> reporter: you're looking at video taken by nasa showing a 150-foot asteroid as seen from australia this morning coming closer to earth than any rock its size. >> it sounded like a safeway, a supermarket, or an olympic sized swimming pool in size. the mass is 130,000 metric tons, which is equivalent to 60,000 suvs, so, you know, it's a big piece of rock. >> reporter: but the much anticipated asteroid is getting overshadowed by a smaller meteor that actually made its way to earth. these incredible images show the ten ton meteor floating over russia smashing windows and injuring hundreds. but experts say the cosmic rock completely unrelated to the da-14 asteroid. >> it's actually been a double whammy day. a lot of interesting things going on. but it is just a coincidence. it's not marking the beginning of a rain of asteroids coming at us. >> i'm thankful for that. >> report

meteorite that exploded above russia on friday. russian researchers say they found a total of 53 pieces of that meteorite thus far and they could be worth more than their weight in it gold, up to $2,200 per gram. that's more than 40 times the current cost of gold. so we have florida, russia and, jeff ranieri, the meteorite in san francisco a few nights ago as well, right? >> a lot of this happens all the time. people are hyper tuned up towards space. >> that giant asteroid. >> i know. i know. it's all going on here. take a look at doppler radar, if you have been away for a while, coming back, this is not a lot of rainfall but it's big news because we have had so little rain in 2013. it's light to moderate on the roadways here for tonight. you can't expect some of these showers to linger over the next half hour and then looking at heavier rainfall for tomorrow. the time line coming up. meanwhile, winds are picking up as well. 10 to 20 miles per hour driving tonight not only is it going to be breezy but it is downright coal. look at these temperatures, 48 right now in novato. 48 in napa.

a cosmic coincidence. a meteor impact in russia followed by a near miss by an asteroid and an unusual flash of light, a fireball seen over the bay area last night. some bay area scientists are hoping the events will bring more attention to their cause, a cause they believe we should all care about. bob redell picks up the story from mountain view. hello, bob. >> reporter: good evening, diane and terry. the group of scientists and former astronauts working out of this office building in mountain view don't want us to be blindsided by a big meteor like we were yesterday when a ten-ton rock from outer space entered the earth's atmosphere over siberia and blowing out windows and hurting more than 1,000 people, that's why the b-612 foundation on the peninsula is trying to give us an extra pair of eyes to the skies. they have been raising money to send into the orbit around the sun a space te le scop to spot the asteroids that we can't see here on earth. nasa has reportedly found most of the ones that could destroy our planet but as far as the ones that are smaller and destroy cities and wipe out
